Lawrence Price grew up in Florida and began his musical career playing Dixieland jazz on the clarinet. He later switched to piano and studied jazz at the University of Miami where he met and played with Ira Sullivan. After moving to Germany, he studied music at the Conservatory of Music in Luxembourg. He won the jazz performance prize for piano at the Trier Jazz Symposium two times. While in Germany he became friends with and studied with John Taylor and John Abercrombie, both of whom participated in the Trier workshops. While in Europe he performed frequently with his own trio and worked on a variety of music projects including film scores, big band performances, and other collaborations.
Since returning to the U.S. in 1998 he has become a first call jazz pianist and has made numerous recordings with various groups. He is a prolific composer and his compositions have been featured on Minnesota Public Radio. He has played with Dave Liebman, Steve Houghton, Brian Torff and many other luminary players. Together with Rich MacDonald he helped pilot the Jazz Studies program at Winona State University and he is also on the faculty of St. Mary’s University in Winona, MN.
